The terms fragrance, scent, or aroma are used primarily by the food and cosmetic industry to describe a pleasant odor, and is sometimes used to refer to perfumes.
For most people, the process of smelling gives little information concerning the ingredients of a substance. It only offers information related to the emotional impact. Experienced people, however, such as flavorists and perfumers, can pick out individual chemicals in complex mixes through smell alone.

THE FRAGRANCE FOUNDATION GRANTS AN INTERVIEW

March 2000
For immediate release

New York — Annette Green, the president of The Fragrance Foundation since 1961, the woman named one of America’s Most Influential Women by Mirabella magazine, and the recognized international authority and futurist, has talked to the editors of Visual Arts Trends about the fragrance industry’s usage of creative services. The topics discussed ranged from aesthetic criteria to the industry’s preference for large multinational creative firms that can handle accounts on a global scale. Perhaps the most noteworthy trend is the fragrance industry’s creative use of illustration — a discipline which has been stagnating as of late.

The fragrance and cosmetic industries depend on the power of advertising and design in getting their messages across to the public. A true testament to the importance of creative services to these industries is that The Fragrance Foundation recognizes excellence at its annual International ‘FiFi’ Awards, in two pertinent categories: Best Package of the Year and Best Advertising Campaign of the Year (Print, TV, Billboard). In 1999, just these two categories amounted to eighteen awards: six in the United States and 12 in Europe.

The article resulting from the interview offers a comprehensive view of doing creative work for the international fragrance and cosmetic industries. It is presently posted in the “hot markets” section of VisualArtsTrends.com.

About The Fragrance Foundation

The Fragrance Foundation was established in 1949 by six industry leaders affiliated with Elizabeth Arden, Coty, Guerlain, Helena Rubenstein, Chanel and Parfums Weil, to develop educational programs about the importance and pleasures of fragrance for the American public. Today, America is the largest fragrance market in the world and the Fragrance Foundation has become an international source for historic, cultural, scientific and industry related reference materials. Under the direction of its President, Annette Green, since 1961, the Fragrance Foundation, a non-profit, educational arm of the fragrance industry, has been acknowledged for its leadership and futuristic activities. In the early sixties, Ms. Green created the concept of a "wardrobe of fragrances" which, for the first time, clarified the enjoyment and diversity of the fragrance experience in all aspects of every person's life. Currently, the Foundation's International Membership includes: manufacturers, suppliers, media, advertising and public relations agencies as well as designers, packagers and retailers.
